As living-costs rise, employees demand for salary increase

As inflation and the cost of living continue to rise, employees of Czech companies, demand proportionate wage increases. Companies, in order not to lose staff who would otherwise accept more cost-effective job proposals, are granting them, in addition to the benefits and bonuses granted by the government.

However, few companies can afford to raise wages following inflation. Most manage to raise them by a few percentage points, just enough to keep their staff given the general labor shortage. They cannot guarantee much because of issues of uncertainty about the future and the continuing rise in inflation and energy costs due to the pandemic period and the conflict in Ukraine.

There are some sectors, such as IT and telecommunications, where the economic crisis is not being felt. Instead, there is a problem with finding candidates: hard to find and contested among various companies that offer economic bonuses, benefits, and generally favorable working conditions. However, if there are critical positions in the company, that is, those for which it is very difficult to find candidates, employers are willing to match the salary with the rate of inflation. But very few companies can afford that, argues Grafton Recruitment director Martina Mala. Now people are willing to change jobs if the new employer offers a salary that covers at least the essential cost of living.
